Experience: Nuclear Transport

Preparation for drop test

I was involved in many projects concerning the safety of spent fuel transport casks from 1977 onwards. Members of my team and I participated in the planning and execution of (IAEA) drop tests of several types of cask used for the transportation of spent nuclear fuel.

For these tests we specified ultrasonic examinations before and after the test and specified other instrumentation to measure the response of the casks during impact. We then backed up the experiments with computer modelling, mainly using finite element techniques.

We also assessed the safety of various spent fuel transport casks in fires and when subject to explosions and during other hypotetical accident situations.

In addition we performed an assessment for the European Union on the risks of transporting nuclear materials by air.
